The Curious Case of Mary and Jodie-2

Image
The doctors knew that they had to separate the twins to ensure the survival of at least Jodie. As the father was adamant about the separation, they tried to appeal to the sensitivities of the twin's mother. As she was also a devout person, she denied the separation too. This made them think a lot and the doctors tried to convince them through a Church Pastor, who also outrightly denied the separation saying that humans are in no position to question the creation of God and killing a child would be against God's will.  This created huge furore within the religious circles and lengthy articles were written against the separation of the conjoined twins, telling that the doctors would want to take away the life of an infant. The time was ticking. So, the doctors ultimately approached the court and the High Court Justice Mr.Johnson ordered for the separation of the twins in one of its kind case giving primacy to the rationale over religion.  This saved Jodie and she lived on to bec...

The Curious Case of Jodie and Mary !

The Curious Case of Jodie and Mary ! "Religion is the opium of the People" - Karl Marx There lived a couple in London. They were very orthodox and believed that everything happens upon God's wish and is to be accepted the way it is. The couple was blessed with beautiful twins. However, the twins were conjoined and were joined by the lower abdomen, through their spine, and shared a heart and lungs. For the sake of the public, they were named Jodie and Mary. Mary is completely dependent on her sister Jodie for the circulation of blood, as she does not have a heart or functional lungs of her own. Due to the pressure to pump for both the bodies at such a tender age (literally days-old baby), Jodie started turning pale. It was certain that they wouldn't make it past 3-6 months. But if they are separated, Mary would die, as she doesn't have a heart of her own. Now, the doctors suggest the parents let them separate the twins, as at least one would survive upon doing so...

Aided-Phytoremediation of Steel Slag !

Aided-Phytoremediation of Steel Slag! "Waste is a misplaced resource"- rightly said. Because, in today's world, there is really no such thing as waste. One man's waste is another man's resource. The same applies to the steel slag. Once considered as a harmful waste product, steel slag is now being looked into as a useful byproduct. Its applications in various industries, particularly in constructions industry, has turned it into a valuable resource. But, its physico-chemical composition makes it unfit for immediate use. Comprised of mostly metal oxides, steel slags produce highly alkaline leachate (pH close to 12.5). Moreover, these metal oxides react with atmospheric humidity and water and undergo volumetric expansion, leading to structural debilities in the construction sector. Therefore, it is stored by the steel industries for months together, to let it stabilize through natural processes. This leads to land, water and air pollution.        Before aided-phytor...
