The doctors knew that they had to separate the twins to ensure the survival of at least Jodie. As the father was adamant about the separation, they tried to appeal to the sensitivities of the twin's mother. As she was also a devout person, she denied the separation too. This made them think a lot and the doctors tried to convince them through a Church Pastor, who also outrightly denied the separation saying that humans are in no position to question the creation of God and killing a child would be against God's will. 

This created huge furore within the religious circles and lengthy articles were written against the separation of the conjoined twins, telling that the doctors would want to take away the life of an infant. The time was ticking. So, the doctors ultimately approached the court and the High Court Justice Mr.Johnson ordered for the separation of the twins in one of its kind case giving primacy to the rationale over religion. 

This saved Jodie and she lived on to become a happy child that she deserved to be !
